Usman Mughal

Usman Mughal has been working in the patent preparation and prosecution field since 2008. He has a B.S. degree in computer engineering and a M.S. degree in electrical engineering. Usman defended his M.S. thesis from NC State University on hierarchical approach to global modeling of active antenna arrays. Usman went on to join Intel Corp. where he worked as an analog/mixed-signal design engineer for 9 years. Usman designed PLLs, DLLs, I/Os, thermal sensors, memory circuits, voltage regulators, debug software, clock distribution circuits, etc. At Intel, Usman received awards for his work and was an inventor on 11 patents. While working at Intel, Usman attended law school because of his interest in becoming a patent attorney. After passing the bar, Usman worked in law firms as an associate and then as a named partner. He co-managed day-to-day domestic and foreign prosecution and budgeting activities for a former client's power management and circuits patent portfolio for various law firms. Usman's technology practice for patents is deep and broad and covers 5G RAN standard, mixed signal circuits, antennas, software, memories (volatile and non-volatile), semiconductor process and packaging, business methods, artificial intelligence hardware, and processors. Usman is regularly recognized for his work. For example, Usman is listed as a "Rising star" by the Oregon Super Lawyers over multiple years. He is rated as "Top Lawyer" by Portland Monthly magazine. Usman is also active in the legal community and community at large. He is part of the founding board of Oregon Muslim Bar Association (OMBA). At OMBA, he interviews judicial and political candidates for endorsement requests. Usman also co-founded a free health clinic in Portland, Oregon, which was later merged with a larger free health provider. Usman supports education for the underprivileged. He led the funding and construction of a primary school in a remote village of Pakistan. Over 50% of the student body is female in that school.

Kate Gaudry

Kate's practice and background spans technology areas, including physics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, biology and software. Her current practice focuses on artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, and software. Kate has wet/dry-lab experiences in these areas from institutions including Harvard University, the University of California San Diego, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Kate represents clients ranging from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies. She has represented universities and companies that have spun-off from universities. Kate has been an active participant in the legal field that has considered how the advancement of artificial intelligence will affect the legal field and may shape patenting strategies or examination in the field. She has co-authored dozens of articles and a book chapter pertaining to this topic, and she is a Co-Chair of the AI Task Force of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). Kate is also a strong advocate for the physically disabled. She has promoted virtual-work environments and other arrangements, so as to ensure that others with disabilities can intellectually and socially contribute to society. She has been a vocal advocate of others with disabilities through online groups and by contributing to a book about real-life experiences pertaining to a new treatment for multiple sclerosis. Thomas Franklin

Tom Franklin focuses his practice on patent prosecution, licensing, and intellectual capital management with more than 25 years of experience with IP. He is experienced in IP audits, due diligence, and strategic planning processes. Through an IP Asset Management plan, he tailors strategy to business goals, competitive pressures, and funding constraints to leverage intangible assets with intellectual property. Tom uses IP protection to maintain the dominance of large companies or assist smaller enterprises who are vying to dominate. Tom's technical experience broadly covers the areas of software, health tech, blockchain, Internet technology, fintech, content delivery, business methods, clean technology, circuit design, imaging arrays, cryptographic design, telecommunications, and electronic design tools, wireless communications, networking, and telemetry systems. Before entering the field of law, Tom spent nine years working in semiconductor fabrication facilities at the Naval Ocean Systems Center and Hughes Aircraft and several more as a senior engineer for Lockheed Martin (now L3 Communications). At L3 Communications, he managed engineering projects involving the design of complex wireless data links, ASIC/FPGA design, digital circuits, satellite transponders, and encrypted data links. Tom brings more than 25 years of experience as a patent attorney recently arriving from one of the largest patent firms where he was a senior partner. He has a B.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering from San Diego State University, summa cum laude. Prior to his legal career, Tom worked for eight years in the semiconductor, imaging array, and high-speed communication fields. His last engineering role was as senior engineer at L3 Communications managing a team of ASIC/FPGA and software engineers developing encrypted data links for government customers. He is a member of the Colorado, D.C., and patent bars. Tom is widely recognized including with Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business that recognized Tom in 2022 and the six years preceding as "a brilliant and intelligent attorney who knows IP law inside out." Chad Clark

Chad Clark's practice encompasses patent and trademark prosecution, licensing, and government contract intellectual property. Drawing on more than 25 years of combined legal and military experience, he helps innovative and emerging businesses strategically deploy their IP to secure competitive advantage in both commercial and U.S. Government markets. Chad's technical expertise spans mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines, including artificial intelligence applications, medical devices, communications, position, navigation, and timing (PNT), additive manufacturing, and unmanned aerial vehicles. His government contracting experience includes matters involving the DoD, NASA, NOAA, and FDA. A graduate of the United States Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree, Chad served ten years as an Air Force pilot, flying special-mission reconnaissance aircraft around the world. He earned his law degree from Stanford Law School, where he studied intellectual property law and served as an editor of the Stanford Law Review. Chad began his legal career with Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP in Cincinnati as a business litigation associate, gaining valuable experience in complex commercial disputes. He then co-founded Clark Business & Health Law, establishing an Ohio office where he developed an intellectual property practice focused on patent drafting, prosecution, and IP strategy for emerging biotech and healthcare companies. His work included patent drafting across diverse technologies, trademark registration, licensing, and counseling on research collaborations and transactional matters. His success with early biotech clients led to his appointment as Vice President of Intellectual Property at Eccrine Systems, Inc., a medical wearables startup. There, he developed and executed the company's IP strategy and drafted patent applications spanning physiology, electrochemical sensing, electronics, and software. As the company grew to more than 50 employees, Chad became its General Counsel, overseeing corporate contracts, licensing, product launches, HR, and governance. In 2020, Chad joined Martensen IP, a Colorado Springs-based boutique intellectual property firm, where he continued his patent prosecution practice, became a shareholder, and served as the firm's financial officer. With Mughal, Gaudry & Franklin, P.C., Chad leverages his broad technical background, business insight, and government experience to deliver strategic counsel to technology innovators. Uday Shah

Uday is a patent engineer with the firm and holds a J.D from Lewis and Clark Law School. Prior to joining Mughal IP, Uday worked as a plasma etch engineer and as an integration engineer in Components Research at Intel Corporation for over 14 years. While at components research, Uday focused on developing novel plasma etch solutions for a wide variety of programs in the areas of transistors (Hi-K metal gate, Tri-Gate, silicon nanowire, III-V and Ge), memory (E-DRAM, Magnetic Tunnel Junction, Floating Body Cell), EUV lithography and directed self-assembly. Uday's integration work focused on developing novel memory devices (Magnetic Tunnel Junction and Resistive Random Access Memory). Uday holds a PhD in engineering science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, with a focus on high temperature plasma diagnostics. Uday holds over 100 US Patents in the areas of Hi-K metal gate transistors, TriGate transistors, Germanium transistors, III-V transistors, nanowire transistors, optical interconnects, EDRAM memory, magnetic memory, resistive random access memory (RRAM) and floating body cell memory. Uday was awarded an Intel Achievement Award for Tri-Gate Transistor Innovation (Highest Technical Award at Intel), and nine Divisional awards for contributions to Planar/Non-Planar Transistor and Memory research. Uday was also recognized at the Smithsonian Museum's American Enterprise Exhibit for Intel's Tri-Gate Innovation (July 2015).

Ayan Paul

Ayan is a registered Patent Agent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, with experience in patent preparation and prosecution, infringement analysis, and targeted prosecution across domestic and foreign jurisdictions. He has drafted and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications over 19 years in technical areas including computer architecture, power management, networking, memory and cache management, circuits, semiconductors, wireless technologies, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Ayan received his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1998 from National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, India, and earned his Ph.D. and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 2005. Before graduate studies he worked as an Electrical Engineer in a petrochemicals company in India. Prior to joining the firm, he spent about 19 years at national and boutique intellectual property firms in both in-person and remote roles. Ayan has published extensively in IEEE and other journals and conferences in Electrical Engineering.

Quentin is a patent engineer in the firm who holds a B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience. Prior to joining the firm, he was an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Maryland, where his lab used genetic, computational, and imaging techniques to study how olfactory signals are encoded in the brain. He taught advanced courses in Diseases of the Nervous System and Cellular Neuroscience and maintained a successful federally funded research program. Quentin also served as a rotating Program Officer for the National Science Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia, overseeing review, funding, and maintenance of a large portfolio of neuroscience grants and projects. He is interested in patent projects at the intersection of biology and computational approaches, including neuromodulation and genetics.
